“This trip far surpassed all of my expectations. It was different from any vacation I have ever taken. I am sold on adventure travel. Jackie planned so many different activities. It was great to step outside my comfort zone, push myself, and truly see what I was capable of accomplishing. It was truly amazing being around women that lifted each other up. Truly a special experience that I will always cherish.” – JH (2019)

No matter where you are on your path, we will meet you there.
[divider style=”dotted”]
5 Days/4 Nights of exploration: inward, outward, onward. In the volcanic highlands of Ecuador.
We’ve all heard it: “Leap and the net will appear.” While this well-intended proverb encourages us to be brave and take risks, it also blindly suggests that something or someone else will magically catch us when we do. Excuse me as I call bullshit.
In 2015, I chose to take a leap and change my life. I had a husband, an apartment, and a beautiful dog, in a place I called home. My leap catapulted me straight into a nomadic life as a solo female traveler.
In trying to adapt to my new reality, I wandered the world aimlessly, wondering more than once when my proverbial “net” would show up.
It wasn’t until many months later that I realized no one and no thing was going to catch me. I had taken control of my life when I made the decision to take my leap. Likewise, it was up to me, and me alone, to catch myself.
Through months of reflection, observation, challenge, and practice, I learned what it took for me to craft the net that would eventually catch me and start me on the long journey back up.
I still carry this incredible life tool with me. It’s easier for me to find the courage to take leaps now (big and small), in my personal life, my work, and my travels, because I trust that my net is ready, even for the most challenging times.
Who or what else can I count on if not myself, especially as I travel the world alone?
As I crafted my net, moving from place to place across the world and back, I took notes. I wrote post after post of what I learned along the way, and I came up with practices to help me define exactly what my net was made of and how to let it catch me when I need it.
I continue to grow stronger and more courageous because of what’s inside my net.
The beauty, and perhaps the reason for the painful path I took, is that what I learned isn’t exclusive to me. It applies to everyone. So, armed with courage and faith, I am sharing these practices, tools, and resources that make up my net, with you.
If you are a female who has taken a leap, or if you plan to take a leap, to make a change in your life (big or small), this retreat is for you. Together in Ecuador, we will explore what it looks like for each of us, collectively and as individuals, to create our own nets, to prepare for any leap.
As we dig inwardly, we will also challenge ourselves outwardly. Each day, in between group discussions and home-cooked hacienda meals, we will participate in the adventure activities listed above.
We’re going to the highlands of Ecuador because I want to take you out of your comfort zone. I’m in the arena of personal development and challenge, and international travel expedites that journey. I want to help you see that you can take a courageous leap and catch yourself too, even if it starts with traveling to Ecuador.
“Before I booked this trip, I read the reviews. Everyone said this was amazing, transformative. I’m a skeptic at heart so I take everything I hear with a grain of salt. But after going on this trip and meeting Jackie, I can confirm what everyone is saying. This retreat was AMAZING. The location was beautiful, the food was wonderful, the activities were well thought out, and I learned more than I thought was possible. I can’t put into words how happy I am that I was able to take this leap. If you get a chance to go on one of Jackie’s retreats, TAKE IT. You will not be disappointed.” – AL (2019)

“The Future”
[divider style=”dotted”]
Hacienda El Porvenir, the location for our retreat, is a family-owned and operated cozy mountain getaway for adventurous travelers. It was started by the current owner Jorge’s great-great-great-grandmother, who left her life on the Ecuadorian coast behind to invest in this hacienda in the mountains. When her friends and family questioned her and told her there is no future in that hacienda, she determinedly named it “El Porvenir,” which means “The Future.” Read more about Hacienda El Porvenir.

[su_spoiler title=”FLIGHT & TRANSPORTATION”]
Airfare is not included. I recommend beginning to research and monitor flights to Quito as soon as you book your spot on the trip. Aim to have your flight by December for best prices. Google Flights is a great place to start.
Arrival airport: Quito, Ecuador (UIO).
Arrival date: We will be at high altitude! The hacienda is located at 11,800 ft. As such, it is recommended that you arrive at least 1 day early, if not sooner, to begin to acclimatize before we start our physical activities.
Transportation to and from the hacienda to Quito is included on Day 1 and Day 5. On Day 1, trip begins with a 10am pickup from Secret Garden Quito Hostel. If you choose not to stay at Secret Garden Quito Hostel, we can accommodate a pickup from nearby hotels in the historical center of Quito (Centro Histórico), just let me know the name of your hotel. If you take a red eye or do not stay in the Centro Histórico, please plan to take a taxi to Secret Garden Quito Hostel for the group pickup. Taxis from the airport cost about $25 and are a set rate (there is a taxi desk at the airport – it is safe and regulated, even if you arrive in the middle of the night, as is common at UIO). On Day 5, we expect to be back at Secret Garden Hostel in Quito around 5pm. Please plan your departure flight or other onward transportation accordingly.

[su_spoiler title=”TRAVEL INSURANCE”]
Each participant must purchase travel insurance coverage, both to protect your own travel investment as well as personal luggage and medical coverage. Click here to read more about travel insurance.
[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”ECUADOR VISA INFORMATION”]
Ecuador does not require a visa for US citizens. Click here for Ecuador visa requirements.
[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”IMMUNIZATIONS”]
Yellow Fever vaccination is recommended if you plan to travel to other places in South America on the same trip. Click to see the CDC recommended vaccinations for travelers heading to Ecuador.
[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”SINGLE OCCUPANCY SUPPLEMENT”]
Price assumes double occupancy. This means, whether you sign up with a friend or not, you will be placed with a roommate (separate beds – you may request your roommate upon booking if applicable). Single occupancy (limited space) available for an extra fee of $400. If you’d like a single room, you may select single occupancy and pay the supplemental charge upon booking.
[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT”]
I recommend being in good physical condition to participate in the adventure activities. The hike to the refugio on Cotopaxi is only 2 miles around trip, but at altitude, it is the most mentally and physically challenging activity. The biking, ropes course, and other hikes are moderate. Some general physical conditioning before this trip will help your mind and body greatly.
[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”PACKING”]
Weather in Ecuador could be warm, windy, cool, sunny, or rainy in February. Brings layers to prepare for temperature, and bring a rain jacket to prepare for wet weather. There is no need to dress up, we will be at the hacienda for 4 nights, casual clothing is encouraged. Athletic clothing including close-toed shoes encouraged for adventure activities. Be sure to bring pants for horseback riding, a swimsuit for the spa day, and pack your sunscreen, it is always more expensive overseas. Towels and linens are provided.
See this post for a detailed carry-on packing list, just remember this list is for several months, you won’t need this much! Carry-on is encouraged, that way the airline won’t lose your bag on the way.
[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”NOTES”]
WiFi: WiFi is available in common areas at the hacienda. It is not the strongest of signals, but it is enough to connect with friends and family if you choose to.
Outlets: Ecuador uses straight, two-pronged outlets like North America, with the same voltage. More about adapters/converters here.
