WHERE ARE WE GOING?

Chilean Patagonia’s “Southern Highway”, the Carretera Austral, is one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

[divider style=”dotted”]
[su_row][su_column size=”1/3″]

Queulat Hanging Glacier

Queulat National Park

Words fail me for this one, and photos can’t speak for it either. I attempt to describe the view from this hike as one of the most incredible, beautiful, fantastical, paradisiacal, single scenes I’ve ever beheld. It is an absolute MUST on the Carretera Austral. Just wait until you see it with your own eyes.

[/su_column]
[su_column size=”1/3″]

Marble Caves Tour

Puerto Rio Tranquilo Marble Caves

These famous caves are hidden under a peninsula of solid marble on the remote glacial waters of Lake General Carrera, which spans the Chile-Argentina border. The caves have been carved out by waves and sediments over thousands of years, and we will explore them by boat or kayak.
[/su_column]
[su_column size=”1/3″]

Cerro Castillo Chile

Cerro Castillo National Park

In my opinion, Cerro Castillo National Park is Patagonia’s best kept secret. The world-class views, castle-shaped peaks, glacier lake, and ZERO tourists are enough to put it at the top of the MUST-DO list on the Carretera Austral. We will finish the trip strong with a 10-mile hike through this park.

Your Host: Traveling Jackie

You probably know me! If you don’t, read more about me here. I first traveled the length of the Carretera Austral in Dec 2017 and fell even more in love with Chilean Patagonia during that time. I can’t wait to go back to this mind-blowingly beautiful region with YOU!

Your Guide: Raffaele from Birds Chile

Sustainable Tourism AwardI worked with Raffaele on my Patagonian Lake District group trip in 2017, and I am very proud to be partnering with him and Birds Chile again as the operator for this trip. Raffaele founded Birds Chile in 2009. In 2016 they were awarded “Most Sustainable Travel Company in Chile,” and in 2017 the Chilean National Tourism Service awarded them with the Touristic Sustainability Stamp, which guarantees visitors that the services comply with specific criteria for environmental, economic, and socio-cultural sustainability. Raffaele is Chilean-Italian and lives in Puerto Varas, Chile. Read more about Birds Chile here.

[su_accordion]
[su_spoiler title=”FLIGHT & TRANSPORTATION”]

Airfare is not included. Flight prices to South America vary on average between $800-$1,500. Hubs like JFK (New York), LAX (Los Angeles), and YYZ (Toronto) are great for these flights.

Arrival & Departure airport for this itinerary: Balmaceda, Chile (BBA). Balmaceda airport is located just outside the town of Coyhaique, Chile. Sky Airline is Chile’s budget domestic airline, and you can fly with Sky or LATAM from Santiago (SCL) to Balmaceda. It would be best to find round-trip flights to and from Santiago from your home airport, and coordinate additional flights with Sky Airline or LATAM to Balmaceda. Specific arrival time and details will be provided to each registered participant as the flights for these dates become available.

I am happy to help with information for ongoing travel and/or to review your potential flight schedule for you to make sure you’re getting the right times, dates, and airports!

[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”TRAVEL INSURANCE”]

Each participant must have travel insurance coverage, both to protect your own travel investment as well as personal luggage and medical coverage. Click here to read more about travel insurance and get quotes.

[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”IMMUNIZATIONS”]

Click to see the CDC recommended vaccinations for travelers heading to Chile.

[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”ROOMMATES/SINGLE OCCUPANCY SUPPLEMENT”]

Due to limited capacity and remoteness of accommodations in this itinerary, everyone must share a room with another participant (single occupancy is not available). This does not mean you have to sign up with someone else, it just means you will be placed with a roommate. If you do sign up with someone else, you may specify your roommate request when you book.

[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT”]

This is a multi-sport trip. We will hike, kayak, and trek on a glacier. A proficient level of physical fitness and ability is necessary for this trip, both to keep the group together with a good pace, and so that you feel your absolute best every day. I recommend getting some good hikes in beforehand and possibly other workouts to train for this amount of activity. I specifically recommend (and use) nuun tablets for electrolyte replacement and hydration, compression socks for blood flow and fast recovery, and emergen-C packets to start each day with a boost of energy. These are in addition to physical fitness, they do NOT replace your training!

[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”PACKING”]

Clothing, luggage, weather, gear, EVERYTHING can be found in this super sweet post found through the link below. (Yes, it says it’s for Torres del Paine, but it works for this trip too!)

Packing List for Patagonia

[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”NOTES”]

  • Trail Safety: Rescues are extremely difficult in Patagonia. Take your time, with steady steps, and take care of each other out there.
  • WiFi/Cell Service: WiFi is available most nights at ours accommodations. Cell service is hard to come by in Patagonia, be ready to be off the grid during much of the trip.
  • Outlets: Chile uses straight, two-pronged outlets like North America (not three-pronged). I always recommend bringing a mobile charger for those times when electricity is limited.
  • Water: Drinkable water will be available throughout the entire trip. I’m a proud pledge of Travelers Against Plastic, and you are invited to give the planet a break by bringing a reusable water bottle to help us avoid using single-use plastic bottles at all costs.
