You’ve seen it on my Snapchat, now come with me to my former home in Patagonia! Bariloche is the chocolate and craft beer capital of Argentina, and it has some of the most beautiful hikes I’ve ever experienced. Guess what. We’re doing it all!

Immersing ourselves in a perfect balance of culture, adventure, and discovery.
[divider style=”dotted”]
Patagonia is more than a place on a map; it is an atmosphere for discovery.
When you embrace it, it embraces back; rejuvenation for the soul.
Last year we covered the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, this year we’re going north to the famous Lake District.
The days will be full, some physically challenging, but the evenings will be comfortable.
You won’t find any camping on this trip. We’ll spend our nights in cozy lodges, with wine or craft beer, discussing life with new friends.

[su_spoiler title=”DAY 1: A tasty introduction to the island of Chiloé”]
After meeting at the airport, we’ll head to the Pacific Coast where the Humboldt current begins its long journey north. When the road ends, we’ll board a ferry and cross the Canal of Chacao, to the archipelago of Chiloé. We will begin exploring the rich culture on this island of myths by visiting the fishing villages of Chacao and Caulín, enjoying fresh oysters and white wine, and taking a boat ride through the breeding grounds of Humboldt and Magellanic Penguins. We’ll go to the village of Ancud and spend the evening and night at Hotel Ancud, which boasts the beautiful and traditional craftsmanship of Chiloé carpenters.
Overnight in Ancud. Hotel Ancud
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”DAY 2: Hike in Chiloé National Park and curanto”]
Today we start early in the morning for an active day exploring the wild and remote coast of the northern section of Chiloé National Park. We’ll go for a nice 8-mile hike through patches of forest, sandy beaches, and cliffs overlooking the southern Pacific Ocean. Our hike ends when we reach the mouth of the Chepu River, famous for its sunken forest. From there a boat will take us to the village of Chepu where, after a short drive, we will arrive at an agroturismo (a local family’s house). Here we will help to prepare and enjoy one of the island’s typical meals: the Curanto, a mix of shellfish, pork, chicken and other local ingredients cooked in a hole in the earth.
Overnight in Castro. Palafito Maiwen
Meals: Breakfast, Box Lunch, Dinner
[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”DAY 3: Hiking and cooking with a local chef”]
Today we start with a walking tour of Castro, including a visit to the market with a local chef. After exploring the market and buying ingredients for dinner with the chef, we will head to the west coast of the island for a hike to Muelle Las Almas (4.5 miles) and a visit to Hullinco Lake.
That evening we’ll return to Palafito Waiwen for a cooking show and dinner with the Chef, using the products we bought at the market.
Overnight in Castro. Palafito Maiwen

[su_spoiler title=”DAY 4: Puerto Varas and craft brewery experience”]
Today we leave the island and head back to the mainland. We’ll arrive to the charming lakeside village of Puerto Varas, where we will have a free afternoon to explore town and enjoy the views of Lake Llanquihue and, weather permitting, the majestic Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes. In the evening, we will meet at the hotel to drive along the lakeshore to Chester Beer Brewing Company, founded by a young American entrepreneur. At Chester we will enjoy a barbecue dinner and have a taste of the different beers produced here, including the famous Obama’s Redemption.
Overnight in Puerto Varas. Casa Kalfu
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”DAY 5: Hiking on the slopes of Osorno Volcano”]
Today we leave early in the morning to enjoy one of the most spectacular hikes in the Chilean Lake District: Paso Desolación. This medium-level difficulty hike is 10 miles through the varying landscapes of the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park. It includes paths through the temperate rainforest and sections along the southern slopes of Osorno Volcano. We will have great views of the Andes range and the volcanoes that surround the area. The trail will take us from the northern shore of Lake LLanquihue to the northeast section of Lake Emerald.
Overnight in Puerto Varas. Casa Kalfu
Meals: Breakfast, Box Lunch, Dinner
[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”DAY 6: Fjord kayaking to Cochamó”]
Today we go kayaking in the northernmost fjord of Patagonia, the geographical gate of the fjords region. We start paddling south on the quiet waters of the Petrohué River. The first part will be through the protected bay of Ralún, and then it opens up to larger sections of the fjord before we reach the village of Cochamó, our final destination. Depending on weather, we will have the chance to see stunning views of the Yates and Hornopirén volcanoes and admire the beauty of the Andean peaks above us, as we paddle on the Pacific Ocean. One of the highlights of this trip is having lunch at a local family’s house, where we will have the opportunity to interact with the pioneers of these remote lands and learn about the daily life of the communities along the fjord.
Overnight in Puerto Varas. Casa Kalfu
Meals: Breakfast, Box Lunch, Dinner
[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”DAY 7: Transfer to Bariloche, Argentina – chocolate and brewery tour”]
After breakfast, we’ll depart for the Andean crossing from Chile to Argentina. We will be driving along Route 215, crossing the countryside of the Chilean Lake District and then climbing up the Andean range to a height of 4,000 feet. After the Chilean & Argentinian customs stops, we will spend some time at the charming alpine style village of Villa la Angostura to enjoy lunch before we continue on our way to San Carlos de Bariloche (Bariloche’s proper name). In the evening, we will do a walking tour to introduce you to the city as well as two of its main attractions: craft beer and chocolate. Please note that beer and dinner is not included tonight, to allow you the opportunity to sample as much or as little as you like, and eat when you’re hungry. We will stop at several chocolate shops and about 5 breweries, which all boast full food menus. Think of it as a progressive (very) happy hour with Traveling Jackie as your guide!
Overnight in Bariloche. Cacique Inacayal Hotel
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”DAY 8: Hike to Refugio Frey”]
Today we explore the stunning area of Cerro Catedral with a beautiful hike along Lago Gutierrez up to Refugio Frey. The walk takes about 6 hours total (8 miles). Once we get to Refugio Frey, we will have lunch with one of the most spectacular views of the alpine valley and mountains. After some time to enjoy the lake, we’ll start our way back. Tonight we have a free night to allow you to explore the many authentic flavors of Bariloche. I will suggest several favorites for Italian cuisine, traditional steakhouses, and more.
Overnight in Bariloche. Cacique Inacayal Hotel
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
[/su_spoiler]
[su_spoiler title=”DAY 9: Circuito Chico and SURPRISE activity!”]
Today we will enjoy the classic Circuito Chico drive, exploring the famous “kilometers” of Bariloche. We’ll start with a lift up to Cerro Campanario in the morning and then go for a soft hike amidst a forest of Coihue trees (my favorite!) in Lahuen Ñadi National Park. Lunch will be at Gilbert Brewery with a beer tasting included. After lunch we will head back to the hotel for a bit of free time before we leave for our SURPRISE farewell dinner activity (trust me, you will love it). Why the secrecy? Because I like games.

In case you don’t know me, I am the founder of this blog as well as The Budget-Minded Traveler blog and podcast. You can find out more about me here. Most of you already know that I have a HUGE love for Patagonia (and craft beer), and I can’t wait to share it with you!
I have traveled with Raffaele twice and am very proud to partner with him and Birds Chile as the operator for this trip. Raffaele founded Birds Chile in 2009. In 2016 they were awarded “Most Sustainable Travel Company in Chile,” and in 2017 the Chilean National Tourism Service awarded them with the Touristic Sustainability Stamp, which guarantees visitors that the services comply with specific criteria for environmental, economic, and socio-cultural sustainability. Raffaele is Chilean-Italian and lives in Puerto Varas, Chile. Read more about Birds Chile here. We will be accompanied by a local Argentinian guide in Argentina.
